FR17T2 Its true that the only constant is change, which generally implies that change is an evolutionary process that leans towards sustainability, green or otherwise. Change for the most part, is good, it keeps us on our toes, constantly thinking and re-thinking. Building envelopes have and continue to evolve though they have been largely considered passive in nature. This session will expand the discussion of building envelope beyond its conventional role as thermal and weather barrier. In its various stages and assembly, the building envelope plays a big role in reducing the overall carbon impact by its ability to contain and arrest energy losses as well as affecting external factors as they relate to manufacturing, transportation and construction waste. Building envelopes have a great ability to mask inefficiencies by their appearance. What may customarily be perceived as a strong and effective barrier to the elements may very well be the weakest link with regard to performance and occupant health. This session will address the potential full impact that building envelopes have on overall building performance. Moreover, the larger global impacts of carbon mitigation will be addressed and discussed. The session will include a discussion of available strategies and methodologies and case study.
