Michael Buono
Founder,
Environmental Service Management Group, Inc. |
| |
Michael Buono is a leading practitioner in the field of waste reduction consulting. He is the
Founder of Environmental Service Management Group, Inc. (ESMG), a waste management
consulting firm based in Wall, New Jersey. Michael is a frequent speaker and devout advocate
of environmental education on waste and recycling issues, and his firm continues to redefine
the professional standard for waste materials management by demonstrating the economic
benefits of environmental stewardship.
ESMG was one of the first members of the waste services industry to embrace sustainable
green building practices, as National Members of the U.S. Green Building Council and Cofounders
of the USGBC-NJ Chapter. Their project list includes construction waste management
programs for 69 LEED Registered Projects, including the first LEED Gold Certified Building
in NJ, The Willow School, which recycled over 90% of waste at a significant net cost savings
for the project.
Michael has over twenty years of experience in the materials management industry, specializing
in alternative methods for waste collection, transportation, waste disposal, and recycling.
His pioneering efforts in the field of pure performance waste reduction consulting have succeeded
in developing shared savings partnerships with hundreds of waste generators in the
public and private sectors. Michael provides consulting services for Fortune 500 clients over a
broad spectrum of industries, and is focused on developing synergistic partnerships with recycling
markets, collection vendors, and consumers of environmental services.
As Director of Program Development his initiatives include establishing reuse market opportunities
for construction materials, and manufacturing waste for art projects. He has also established
reuse markets for durable medical equipment salvage and rehabilitation. Michael was
central to the effort to refine innovative solutions for the beer and soft drink industry, helping
them to reclaim, repackage and reuse liquid product for alternative beneficial use as animal
feedstock and as an odor inhibitor in land applications for hog farms.
Michael established ERM Resource Management, the precursor to ESMG, in 1986 as a unique,
hands-on recycling service consulting company. This new management concept focused on
using waste materials measurement, systems auditing, and staff compliance training as primary
tools to enhance internal waste conservation and pollution prevention. These strategies
defined the concept of collection service elimination as an effective method for reducing environmental
expenditures and as a way to combat inherently anticompetitive industry trade practices.
Prior to opening his practice, Michael served the Director of Corporate Sales and Marketing
with a large independent waste collection firm operating in the NJ/PA marketplace. His areas
of specialization included mergers & acquisition, public relations, equipment transitions, and
retention of major accounts. In addition to the development of a full service reclamation,
equipment, and maintenance subsidiary, Michael assisted with municipal bids and commercial
contracts for some of the first recycling programs established during the 1980's.

US Environmental Protection Agency |
| photo courtesy of doby Photography |
Karen Butler currently the National Manager for Commercial Building
Design initiative at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR voluntary labeling
program. She provides strategic outreach to the architectural commercial buildings community and
its affiliates to elevate their awareness on incorporating energy performance targets during the project design phase.
Ms Butler conceived and manages enhancements to the EPA Target Finder on-line tool; created in 1999
and received more than 45,000 hits during the fourth quarter of 2009. The tool help architects set
energy use targets and rate the relative energy efficiency of commercial building design projects.
She helped orchestrate Target Finder's acceptance to establish energy goals for Architecture 2030,
American Institute of Architects' Sustainable Practice, as well as state and federal requirements
such as the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. She also works with 3rd party software
developers maintaining the Target Finder interface with Building Information Modeling tools
In 2004, Ms. Butler created the "Designed to Earn ENERGY STAR" certification to provide recognition
for projects and A/E firms that meet EPA criteria for energy efficiency. The more than 300 firms
who joined the program submitted over 200 design projects which achieved ENERGY STAR and averaged
50 percent less fossil fuel energy than typical buildings
She's developed guidance to help owners and architects transition design projects to operating buildings
that earn the ENERGY STAR qualified building label. The first five completed building projects that
received the label are among the top 10 percent in the nation for energy efficiency.
Ms Butler participates on the AIA-COTE Technical Review Committee, AIA Educational Committee, ASHRAE
Building Performance Metrics Steering Committee, US EPA Green Buildings Work Group, USGBC LEED Advisory
Committee and New Buildings Institute research projects to refine energy performance as it relates
to sustainable design, energy and costs savings and preventing CO2 and global warming. In 2006 she
was invited to participate in a meeting on Energy Labeling for Buildings hosted by Natural Resources of Canada.
She has written articles and been featured in Eco-Intel, EcoStructure, Building Operating Management,
Archi-tech, and Metal Architecture and most recently contributed to ASHRAE - Energy Efficiency Guide
for Existing Commercial Buildings. Ms Butler has been a speaker at AIA national conventions, USGBC's
GreenBuild conferences and many local and regional chapter events.
Ms Butler started federal service with EPA in 1992 and managed the Implementation Team for its flagship
energy efficiency program - Green Lights. In 1998 she was awarded the Hammer Award from the National
Partnership for Reinventing Government sponsored by past Vice President Al Gore.
Ms Butler's academic background includes a Master's of Architecture education from California Polytechnic

|
Edward Mazria, Founder and Executive Director of Architecture 2030, is an internationally recognized architect, who reshaped the national and international dialogue on energy and climate change by bringing the Building Sector the largest energy consumer and contributor to global warming to center stage. Mazria's research showed conclusively that buildings are responsible for almost half of all U.S. energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and that any viable solution to global warming must run through the Building Sector.
As an award-winning architect with over thirty-five years of experience in low-energy and passive solar energy design, and the author of numerous published works, including The Passive Solar Energy Book, which is currently in use worldwide, Mazria is preeminently qualified to develop a method for transforming the Building Sector from the greatest contributor to climate change to its leading solution.
Based on his experience and research, Mazria developed and issued the widely adopted 2030 Challenge, a measured and achievable strategy to dramatically reduce global GHG emissions and fossil-fuel consumption by the year 2030.
Mazria speaks nationally and internationally on the subject of architecture, design, energy, and climate change and has taught architecture at several universities including the University of New Mexico , University of Oregon and UCLA.
