The AlA New Jersey Scholarship Foundation is seeking qualified applicants who are currently attending Schools of Architecture in order to award scholarship monies. Eligibility Requirements for 2009/2010 Scholarship Grant

AlA New Jersey Scholarship Foundation Inc. maintains a program of scholarship grants to qualified architectural students from New Jersey or attending architecture school in New Jersey for the purpose of recognizing scholastic achievement, demonstrated talent, and potential for success in the profession of Architecture. Financial need is also a consideration for the award of scholarship funds. It is noted that funds for the program come from contributions and fundraising efforts of AlA New Jersey members, interested sources in the construction industry, and private individuals located in New Jersey.

The information provided on the application, together with the supplementary documents, transcripts and data, will be treated confidentially. It will be used to evaluate the degree of need, scholastic promise, level of achievement, and other aspects of eligibility and potential, including personal goals and future plans for practicing architecture.

The application should be carefully and completely filled out, then returned to the foundation with the registration fee of $5.00, personal statement essay, and a sample portfolio (8-1/2" x 11" or 11" x 17"format) of current student projects and related design work. Supplemental documents including Transcript, Federal Student Aid form, and optional letters of reference can follow separately.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

To be considered for a scholarship, a student must meet the following qualifications:

  • New Jersey Connection: If attending school outside of New Jersey, applicant shall have a permanent legal family address in the State of New Jersey -or - if married or living as a single independent, applicant shall have a legal address in the State of New Jersey - or - if a student from another state, applicant shall be attending an accredited School of Architecture within the State of New Jersey;
  • Architectural Study Requirement : Applicant shall be matriculated as a full-time student in an accredited architectural program at a School of Architecture and shall have completed by June of this year one full year of study towards a first professional degree (either a Bachelor of Architecture or Masters in Architecture);
  • Financial Need Demonstration : Applicant shall demonstrate that financial assistance is needed to continue school studies or to relieve financial pressures on the family, which if unabated, might reduce the applicant's ability to develop architectural talent and potential;
  • Demonstration of Architectural Talent : Applicant shall demonstrate a definite talent or potential for achievement in architecture, supported by official school transcript, personal statement essay, and a portfolio of student projects and design work (copies accepted);
  • Demonstration of Interest, Commitment, and Character: Applicant shall indicate interest and commitment in pursuing an architectural career in the State of New Jersey after schooling is completed; (via description of intentions in personal statement essay), and applicant shall demonstrate outstanding character through the personal statement essay and/or through optional letters of reference from appropriate sponsors, professors, employers, or friends of the family that support the candidate.

GENERAL INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS:

Failure to retain satisfactory grades towards obtaining a degree in Architecture will be considered cause for ineligibility on any subsequent application for assistance. There is no limitation on the awarding of grants, save that of the available funds, to the number of recipients attending from any single School of Architecture.

The actual amount of money to be made available to anyone recipient is determined by the Board of Trustees on an annual basis. Scholarships are not intended to cover a student's total costs for nyone semester or year, except in most unusual situations.

Any student eligible for consideration shall apply in full on or before the date of Monday, JUNE 9,2009. All information received is maintained in complete confidence. Names of the scholarship grant recipients are publicized via the AlA New Jersey organization when awards are distributed.

NOTES:

  • All applications are due on or before MONDAY, JUNE 9,2009
  • Scholarships grants are awarded for the 2009-10 School Year
  • Applications must be complete in order to be considered for the award, this includes all supplemental documents and application fee. Partial applications submitted without transcripts, personal statements, and/or the application fee are considered "INCOMPLETE" and will not be processed.
  • Remember: Please request school transcripts and financial statements EARLY!
  • Multiple Scholarship Grants are awarded each year in an amount determined by the Scholarship Foundation Board of Trustees. The Grant Awards range from $2,500 to $5,000 per selected student.
  • The award selection is based upon an applicant's demonstration of scholastic achievement, financial need, and architectural talent.
