Newly Licensed Architects Awards Ceremony

On June 12, 2003 AIA New Jersey sponsored its second annual Award Ceremony for newly licensed architects in the State of New Jersey. All newly licensed architects received a Certificate of Acheivement from AIA New Jersey and a membership application to join AIANJ. We are always seeking new members that are willing to become an integral part of this organization. We all have something to contribute and share in order to make AIA New Jersey a stronger organization. Why Design Build... Why Not?

The second Phase of the program "Why Design Build… Why Not?" was presented to the membership for two HSW learning units by Barry Bannett, RA, AIA, DBIA of AIA West Jersey. Barry made a dynamic power point presentation explaining the benefits of an architect getting involved in design build. A brief history of Design Build was outlined, case studies were highlighted such as the Hoover Dam and the Phoenix Project at the Pentagon. Some of the advantages of Design Build are:

*Most cost effective delivery system
*Design submission and pricing project at the proposal stage possible
*Earliest knowledge of firm costs
*Allows most innovations/options for owner to select
*Fastest delivery system
*Delivers equal or higher quality
*Allows clearest definition of risks
*Least claims and litigation

Some of the drivers of Design Build are:
*Early completion
*Reduced owner staffing
*Less management effort
*Reduces uncertainty
*Less conflict
*Lower costs
*Increased quality
*Innovation

Architects should practice Design Build because it offers them an ability to expand their processes and business and opportunities for increased compensation while providing a service as a single source of responsibility to the owner and architects have the vision, the leadership, the client focus and the technical knowledge in this unique type of project delivery.

Thanks, Barry to you and your staff for your presentation, vision and your willingness share your expertise with AIA New Jersey.
