Changes
for the Next Session:
Now that the election is over and leadership has been decided
things are moving along in Trenton. The Democratic leadership
in the Assembly remains the same with Assemblyman Albio
Sires as Speaker and Assemblyman Joe Roberts as Majority
Leader. The Republican Minority Leader Assemblyman Paul
DiGaetano, a moderate, stepped down and was replaced by
Assemblyman Alex DeCroce, a more conservative Republican.
In the Senate, Senate Co-President Richard Codey was elected
to become Senate President in his own right. Senator Bernard
Kenny was elected as Majority leader. Senator Leonard Lance
has been selected to serve as Minority Leader and Senator
Tom Kean as Minority Whip.
Now
that the Governor's party is in control of both houses,
Governor McGreevey will have an easier time pushing his
agenda, like the issue of Smart Growth, through the Legislature
and getting his appointments confirmed by the Senate Judiciary
Committee. However, he will still hear from opponents like
Senator William Gormley (R-2), Senator Diane Allen (R-7)
and Assemblyman Alex DeCroce (R-26), all strong voices in
the minority.
A-706/S-2683
:
On
December 4, 2003, S-2683 sponsored by Senator Geist (R-4)
and Assemblywomen Weinberg (D-37) and Friscia (R-19) was
scheduled to be heard in the Senate State Government Committee.
The bill, which concerns certain contracts to privatize
state services, was held.
